Which god do Mormons worship?

Is Adam the Father?

It is hardly well known today what the founder Joseph Smith, the second president Brigham Young and those who followed them actually believed about God[s]. Today, what is presented to the church is often softened to avoid embarrassment, though they would certainly conceal it if at all possible, there are some that are proud of their aberrant statements.

The Celestial kingdom is the highest of the three Heavens where all obedient Mormons that have kept the ordinances of the Mormon gospel go. At this highest level, good Mormons, both men and women, will become gods and goddesses. Men are awarded dominion over their own planet where they will gather numerous wives to produce spirit children. Mormonism teaches that Adam, the first man described in the Bible, was one of these gods, he is the god of planet earth.

Brigham Young: “I tell you more: Adam is the father of our spirits. He lived upon an earth, he did abide his creation and did honor to his calling and priesthood and obeyed his master or lord, and probably many of his wives did the same, and they lived and died upon an earth and then were resurrected again to immortality and eternal life. (Brigham Young, October 8, 1854, Brigham Young Addresses, 1850-1854, Vol. 2, by Elden J. Watson, sheet 221)

In other words Adam lived on another world obeyed another god – was exalted and came to earth to be our god.

Wilford Woodruff, the fourth prophet of the church, recorded these interesting statements in his journal:

President Young followed and made many good remarks “. . . He said that our God was Father Adam. He was the Father of the Savior Jesus Christ--Our God was no more or less than Adam . . . Michael the Archangel (Wilford Woodruff Private Journal, Feb 19. 1854)

Brigham Young “Is there in heaven of heavens a leader? Yes, and we cannot do without one and that being the case, whoever he is may be called God. Joseph said that Adam was our Father and God (Brigham Young, Journal History of the Church, May 14, 1876)

As Brigham Young the second president of the church stated, the Adam as God doctrine originated with Joseph Smith, who taught this to his leaders in the church.

I tell you, when you see your Father in heaven, you will see Adam . . .” (Manuscript Addresses of B.Y., Oct. 8, 1854)

Can Adam be the God of Scripture?

“When our Father Adam came into the Garden of Eden . . . He is Michael, the archangel, the Ancient Of Days. . . he is our Father and our God, and the Only God with whom we have to do” (Gen. Conf., Journal of Discourses, 1:50-51, 1854).

Can Michael be Adam who is the God of Scripture?

So mankind began by an angel they call the father, who had spirit children. This Father became the first man according to Mormons 2nd president and prophet Brigham Young, who we know as Adam and his heavenly name is Michael.

This changes the Bibles record drastically and is contradictory to everything Jesus and the apostles of the Bible knew.

Wilford Woodruff states “At meeting of school of the prophet, President Young said Adam was Michael, the Archangel and he was the Father of Jesus Christ and is our God and that Joseph taught this principle” (Wilford Woodruff Journal, Dec. 16, 1867)

Brigham Young the second president and prophet of the church stated, the Adam-God teaching originated with Joseph Smith, who may not had always proclaimed it openly but was made known to his leadership. We do have their statements today so there is no doubt what they believed and practiced.

Joseph said that Adam was our Father and God (Brigham Young, Journal History of the Church, May 14, 1876)

June 23, 1889, George 0. Cannon, a member of the First Presidency taught that “Jesus Christ is Jehovah” and that “Adam is His Father and our God” (“Daily Journal of Abraham H. Cannon,” vol. 11, p. 39).

“Concerning the item of doctrine ...that Adam is our Father and God, ...do not trouble yourselves, neither let the Saints be troubled about that matter. ...[T]he Prophet and Apostle Brigham [Young] has declared it, and that IT IS THE WORD OF THE LORD” (Franklin D. Richards, LDS Millennial Star, Vol. 16, p. 534, 1854).

This is no different than when the Mormons say the book of Mormon is the word of the lord.

These admissions confirm that Adam is the God of this world whom Mormons worship. This is what they believed and practiced as the restoration of the church, as the true gospel, the restored gospel with the precious parts that were missing.

“But if it be called in my name then it is my church, it be so that they are built upon my gospel. “Verily I say to you, that ye are build upon my gospel; therefore ye shall call whatsoever things ye do call, in my name; therefore if ye call upon the Father, for the church, if it be in my name the Father will hear you” (3 Nephi 27:8-9).

If theirs is a different Father (and a different Jesus) than clearly they have a different gospel accompanying them. Which makes the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints only generically named after Jesus. They cannot be in possession of the true eternal Father and Jesus Christ his “only begotten son” who is the head of the eternal church when it contradicts what He said in the Bible!

In 1838, Joseph Smith led a group of followers seventy miles north of present-day Kansas City, Missouri. There he founded a new settlement that he called Adam-ondi-Ahman. The place is significant in Mormon history for it is here that Smith claimed the first man, Adam, lived (Doctrine and Covenants117:8), and it is prophesied a future visit of Adam to this place (Doctrine and Covenants 116:1).

According to Smith, the Garden of Eden was located nearby in Jackson County, Missouri. Only biblically ignorant people would believe such statements. The Bible says it is located in the Middle East, where the same rivers mentioned in Genesis are found today. Whom will Mormons believe? There are so many more contradictions then there are agreements that the only way one can say Mormonism is Christianity is by sheer ignorance of the facts.

The story of mankind's beginnings only gets further from the truth found in the Bible. “Mankind are here because they are the offspring of parents [Adam and Eve] who were first brought here from another planet, and power was given them to propagate their species” (Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 7, p. 285, 1859).

“He [Adam] was the person who brought the animals and the seeds from other planets to this world.... You may read and believe what you please as to what is found written in the Bible. Adam was made from the dust of an earth, but NOT from the dust of this earth” (Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 3, p. 319, 1856).

With no regard to the word of truth Brigham Young ignored the conciseness of the Bibles description of Genesis 2:7 “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, (earth, mud). Man did not have life in him until God breathed into his nostrils the breathe of life”.

This idea of Adam pre-existing on another earth was continually upheld by the Mormon prophet Brigham Young. In a lecture delivered by President Young at his home in St. George, Utah, on the evening of February 7th, 1877:...

“Adam was an immortal being when he came on this earth; He had lived on an earth similiar [sic] to ours; he had received the Priesthood and the keys thereof, And had been faithful in all things and gained his resurrection and his exaltation, and was crowned with glory, immortality and eternal lives, and was numbered with the Gods for such he became through his faithfulness, had begotten all the spirits that was to come to this earth. (Unpublished Revelations of the Prophets and Presidents of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, complied by Fred C. Collier, Vol 1, pp. 116-117, Collier's Publishing Co. P.O. Box 1866, Salt Lake City, UT 84110, 2nd edition).

Notice what he states: numbered with the Gods; had begotten all the spirits that was to come to this earth.” Which means every person who has ever lived, that is quite a large family.

It appears that Brigham was sure Adam held the position of God he assigned him: Adam is our Father and God. HE IS THE GOD OF THE EARTH. So says Brigham Young. Adam is the great archangel of this creation. He is Michael. He is the Ancient of Days. HE IS THE FATHER OF OUR ELDER BROTHER, JESUS CHRIST....” ( Edward Tullidge (quoting Brigham Young), Women of Mormondom, p. 179, 1877)

In 1966 Bruce R. McConkie stated: "As now constituted the Doctrine and Covenants contains 136 sections....Most of these sections came to Joseph Smith by direct revelation, the recorded words being those of the Lord Jesus Christ himself" (Mormon Doctrine,)

Within the Doctrine and Covenants it is written-- “And also with Michael or Adam, the father of all, the prince of all, the ancient of days. (Doctrine and Covenants 27:11, August 1830 also Doctrine and Covenants 116:1; 138:38 state that Adam is the Ancient of Days.)

Young thought of this so called revelation as stupendous: “ with regard to Adam being our Father and God...It is one of the most glorious revealments of the economy of heaven... (President Brigham Young, in the Tabernacle, General Conference, October 8, 1861, 10:30 a.m.; Brigham Young Addresses, 1860-1864, Vol. 4, by Elden J. Watson, sheet 134)

The Bible tells us Michael is an angel, which is not the same species as God or man. Of course the Bibles conflict with Mormon theology does not matter when they listen to their modern prophets over Moses and those who came after him.

Brigham Young stated “How much unbelief exists in the minds of the Latter day Saints in regard to one particular doctrine which I revealed to them, and which God revealed to me namely that Adam is our father and God .... Our father adam helped make this earth .. he brought one of his wives with him… Then he (Adam) said, “I want my children who are in the spirit world to come and live here. I once dwelt upon an earth something like this, in a mortal state, I was faithful, I received my crown and exaltation. I have the privilege of extending my work, and to its increase there will be no end. I want my children that were born to me in the spirit world to come here and take tabernacles of flesh... that their spirits may have a house, a tabernacle, or a dwelling place as mine has. (Brigham Young, Deseret News, 6/16/1873)

According to Mormonism’s founder’s, Adam is the creator of the earth (who is Michael), he took one of his wives from the spirit world? With all these major contradictions to the Bible Mormon’s want the real Christian church to accept them as Christian without having any Christian teaching.

Brigham Young made this statement “There was no man scarcely upon the earth that had a true conception of God. . . . But all this was swept away in one moment by the appearance of . . . God, the Father, and His Son Jesus Christ, to the boy Joseph. . . . The Father came accompanied by the Son, thus showing that there were two personages of the God-head . . . Joseph saw that the Father had a form; that He had a head; that He had arms; that He had limbs; that he had feet; that He had a face and a tongue . . .” (Journal of Discourses, vol. 24, pp.371-72).

Jesus said no man has seen the Father except he as the Son (Jn.1:18,6:46) but Joseph claims that the Father came to earth (with Jesus) looking like a man; because Mormons believe he is a man. So when god the Father appeared to Joseph along with one of his spirit sons, He was actually Adam who is the Father/god and Michael an angel. “Who was the Savior begotten by?....Who did beget him? His Father, and his father is our God, and the Father of our spirits, and he is the framer of the body, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Who is he? He is Father Adam; Michael; the Ancient of Days” (President Brigham Young, Feb. 19, 1854, Brigham Young Collection, LDS Archives)

If Adam is an angel (Michael) and the Father of Jesus then Jesus is the offspring of an angel which would make him an angel. The Father who supposed to be Adam said to the Son in Hebrews 1:5-6 For to which of the angels did He ever say: "You are My Son, Today I have begotten You" ?And again: "I will be to Him a Father, And He shall be to Me a Son"? But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says: "Let all the angels of God worship Him."

Hebrews 1:13: “But to which of the angels has He ever said: "Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool"? NONE.

Hebrews 2:5 it concludes ‘For He has not put the world to come, of which we speak, in subjection to angels”

Since both Adam and Jesus are angels we have a contradiction that cannot be explained away, neither Adam nor Jesus can be rulers of this planet, since they are both are originally angels.

So we have angels worshipping another angel (whom the Mormons called a god), men worshipping other men as god, we see how confusing it is to mix the Mormon religion with biblical Christianity, they do not go together at all.

Jesus said of angels that we are like them in the resurrection- they neither marry nor are given in marriage; nor can they die anymore” (Luke 20:35-36).

This all becomes very confusing if one puts the teaching of Mormon authorities next to the Bible. If Adam is an angel and the father of Jesus then Jesus is the offspring of angels which makes him an angel. This would mean all mankind are of the species of angels. This makes God who spoke the word in the Bible wrong…

Within Brigham Young's Adam-God Sermon he strongly cautioned those do not accept his teachings by saying, “for they will prove their salvation or damnation” (April 9, 1852)

“Now hear it, O inhabitants of the earth, Jew and Gentile, Saint and sinner! When our father Adam came into the Garden of Eden, he came into it with a celestial body, and brought Eve, one of his wives, with him. He helped to make and organize this world. He is MICHAEL, the archangel, the ANCIENT OF DAYS! about whom holy men have written and spoken. HE is our FATHER and our GOD, and the Only God with whom WE have to do. Every man upon the earth, professing Christians and non-professing, must hear it, and will know it sooner or later . . . When Adam and Eve had eaten of the forbidden fruit, their bodies became mortal from its effects and therefore their offspring were mortal. When the Virgin Mary conceived the child Jesus, the Father had begotten him in his own likeness. He was not begotten of the Holy Ghost. And who is the Father? He is the first of the human family; and when he took a tabernacle, it was begotten by his Father in heaven . . . Jesus, our elder brother, was begotten in the flesh by the same character that was in the Garden of Eden, and who is our Father in Heaven. Now, let all who may hear these doctrines, pause before they make light of them, or treat them with indifference, for they will prove their salvation or damnation. (Journal of Discourses, 1:50-51 1854).

Journal of Discourses is one of the books they offer with the Bible to the naïve consumers that inquire from their ads on TV. So Mormons worship the God who created and earth and fell. For over 100 years this was known and taught revelation but now they want to hide it.

Just to make this perfectly clear what Brigham meant: “What man or woman on earth, what spirit in the spirit in the spirit world can say truthfully that I ever gave a wrong word of counsel, or a word of advice that could not be sanctioned by the heavens? (Journal of Discourses vol.12 p.127)

The enigma of where we came from is solved by Smith’s revelation to Brigham Young and others. An angel (Michael) who is Adam (and God) listened to another angel (Lucifer) who offered the gospel of progression To Eve and Adam and they obeyed him. Yet, Jesus who is another spirit child of the Father was sent to earth to save us from the other spirit child of Adam, who is his Father on earth and in heaven. Not too confusing?

Mormons will tell us that Lucifer had the correct message (to become god) but that he offered Adam (his Father) a shortcut. According to Mormonism Christ was tempted by his own brother Satan (Jesus, who is the truth said there is no truth in him) but Mormons say he gave the truth to Adam and Eve; only he was offering a short cut. They neglect to see that this so- called short cut was taken and this is the very thing they are still teaching with progression and exaltation.

Mormon apostle Joseph Fielding Smith, Jr. wrote, “I never speak of the part Eve took in this fall as a sin, nor do I accuse Adam of a sin” (Doctrines of Salvation, vol.1, p. 114). Again, “This was a transgression of the law, but not a sin in the strict sense, for it was something that Adam and Eve had to do!” (ibid. p. 115).

Assistant to the Twelve Apostles Sterling W. Sill spoke of Adam's fall: “Adam fell, but he fell in the right direction. He fell toward the goal.... Adam fell, but he fell upward” (Deseret News, Church Section, 31 July 1965, p. 7). “...if Adam had not transgressed.... they would have had no children; wherefore they would have remained in a state of innocence, having no joy, for they knew no misery; doing no good, for they knew no sin....Adam fell that men might be” (Book of Mormon, 2 Nephi 2:22-23). They are saying that would have no joy unless sin entered. The very opposite of what the Bible says. If Michael is Adam and he fell into sin and became like all the angels that follow the devil then he is actually an enemy of god. Then how could Adam receive worship as a sinful man? And If Adam was a god why is his offspring fallen men.

The 'fall' of Adam and Eve was not a sin but an essential act upon which mortality depends” (Smith, Answers to Gospel Questions, vol. 5, p. 15).

Was disobeying God, and essential act for our mortality? This is twisting the meaning of the Bible and making sin insignificant, the very sin Jesus came to die for and rescue us from Satan’s lies. Gen.2:16-17 Adam was instructed by God NOT to eat of the tree, Lucifer comes along challenging Eve to disobey “has God said?” Gen.3:4 Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. This is the first lie recorded in the scripture. And this is why Jesus attributes to Satan the title “the father of lies” (Jn.8:44), he is the source of all lying. V.5 “For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” The very same thought he had for himself that changed his nature to evil, to be like God. The immediate results were guilt and shame (Gen.3:7-8) the same feelings we have today when we know we have done something wrong.

Within the laws and ordinances of the church are apparent influences of Masonry which teaches Lucifer is the true light that gives enlightenment. Masonry has a secret Luciferian doctrine which is only revealed to a mason as he reaches the higher levels. Manly Palmer Hall, one of the greatest authorities on Masonry, writes, “When the Mason ... has learned the mystery of his Craft, the seething energies of Lucifer are in his hands (Manly Palmer Hall, The Lost Keys of 'Freemasonry, p 48). Lucifer the light bearer offers his ways to his adepts initiating them in his false light. Mormonism offers the teaching of Lucifer to eve as something that is God ordained for man and they call this the goal of their restored gospel.

This is true Christianity! Outrageous distortions using the same names in the Bible with no regard to what God has already written through his true Jewish prophets.

Journal of Wilford Woodruff; April 9 1852; Quoting Brigham Young. “Our Father begot all the spirits that were before any tabernacle was made. When our Father came into the Garden He came with his Celestial body & brought one of his wives with him and ate of the fruit of the Garden until He could beget a Tabernacle. And Adam is Michael God and all the God that we have anything to do with. They ate of this fruit & formed the first Tabernacle that was formed. And when the Virgin Mary was begotten with child it was by the Father and in no other way only as we were begotten. I will tell you the truth as it is in God. The world don't know that Jesus Christ our Elder Brother was begotten by our Father in Heaven. Handle it as you please, it will either seal the damnation or salvation of man. He was begotten by the Father & not by the Holy Ghost.”

History of the Church, 4:207-208; Joseph Smith; Monday, October 5, 1840. Emphasis added. Commencing with Adam, who was the first man, who is spoken of in Daniel as being the “Ancient of Days,” or in other words, the first and oldest of all, the great, grand progenitor of whom it is said in another place he is Michael, because he was the first and father of all, not only by progeny, but the first to hold the spiritual blessings, to whom was made known the plan of ordinances for the salvation of his posterity unto the end, and to whom Christ was first revealed, and through whom Christ has been revealed from heaven, and will continue to be revealed from henceforth. Adam holds the keys of the dispensation of the fullness of times; i.e., the dispensation of all the times have been and will be revealed through him from the beginning to Christ, and from Christ to the end of all the dispensations that are revealed.

Journal of Wilford Woodruff; April 10, 1852; Quoting Heber C. Kimball. “Some have said that I was very presumptuous to say that Brother Brigham was my God and Savior. Brother Joseph was his God. The one that gave Joseph the keys of the Kingdom was his God, which was Peter. Jesus Christ was his God and the God and Father of Jesus Christ was Adam.

Men who think they are or will be god cannot be serving the true and living God. Why do Mormons not call they call the Father Adam?

In Mormonism, Adam is like other gods who rule over their own planets, who will have countless millions worship them and pray to them. This is what Mormons want their followers to believe (not openly) but only after they go though their teaching programs can this be accepted. They will never tell you this when they come to your door.

What makes this even more convoluted is that Mormons believe Noah is the arch angel Gabriel (J. Smith taught this) he is next to Adam in the priesthood. (church news Mar. 12 1994). Luke records Gabriel appearing to Mary and Zecharias, why did he not say he is Noah? Are we to believe Noah came back from the dead and visited him? Why did he revert back to an angel instead of becoming a God? Well answers are never forthcoming or substantial when you are dealing with fantasy mixed with real biblical characters in history.

So when it comes to Jesus, their position is this--Elder Brockbank: “It is true that many of the Christian churches worship a different Jesus Christ than is worshipped by the Mormons or The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. For example from the Church of England’s Articles of Religion, article one, I quote: ‘There is but one living God, everlasting, without body, parts, or passions….’ We cannot obtain salvation and eternal life by worshipping fake Christs… The belief that God has no body parts, and passions is not a doctrine of Jesus Christ or a doctrine of the holy scriptures but is a doctrine of men, and to worship such a God is in vain” (“The Living Christ,” Ensign, May, 1977, pp. 26–7).

President Hinkley commented, of those who question whether the Mormons worship the same Jesus “No I don’t. The traditional Christ of whom they speak is not the Christ of whom I speak. For the Christ whom I speak has been revealed in this dispensation of the fullness of Times” (Deseret News, June 20 1998)

If one worships this exalted man from Adam, (his father) it is creature worship not creator worship. They are worshipping an offspring of another creature. No matter how far one goes back, there is always another man.

Stephen E. Robinson, a Brigham Young University professor tries to convince us in his book How Wide the Divide that the differences are sleight. “Evangelicals often accuse Latter-day Saints of worshiping a ‘different Jesus’ because we believe some things about Jesus that cannot be proven from the Bible…. This charge that people worship ‘a different Jesus’ if they disagree over any detail of his character or history, is simply a rhetorical device, a trick of language” (Craig L. Blomberg and Stephen E. Robinson, How Wide the Divide? pp. 136–37).

As we have just seen in their own quotes, they acknowledge that they have a different Jesus. And it is not just some things that are different because of semantics but the very nature of man and God are completely different. None of these are insignificant to be over looked because its challenges history and the very words recorded in the Bible.

Inherent in the fallen human condition is the propensity to worship something else other than the true God and the way he has required. Usually it is self. When one arrives at the state of thinking themselves as becoming or being a god, a creature that deserves worship from other creatures (human or not) they have come to the consciousness of Lucifer who is now known as Satan. The love of status and position are attractive and drive people to lust after the ultimate power which can never be theirs. This is why God tells us to humble ourselves, to not think more highly of ourselves.

On counter point:

If everyone is worshipping “their own God,” on different planets, then logically, each of these “Gods” must be false. None of them can be the true God because they all belong to the same polytheistic system of numerous gods, offspring of men. Therefore, any god the Mormon claims to worship through his church cannot the God of Scripture. Not on this earth (who is Adam), nor anywhere else; it is that unambiguous.
