The Comforter

The Muslims claim that the Bible has been corrupted, and it cannot be trusted. One of the chief verses they point out is the Greek rendering for Comforter (Paracletos) which means “advocate” or “helper.” Their scholars translate this to be “Pariclytos” and use this to point to Mohammed (related to ahmad praised one). The Muslims see Jesus' reference to the coming of the Comforter helper ( Paraclete) as fulfilled by Mohammed They base this on Quaran 61:6 Mohammed as ahmad (Periclytos) “Jesus, the son of Mary, said “O children of Israel! I am the apostle of God ... giving glad tidings of an apostle to come after me whose name shall be ahmad.”

In all the 5,366 manuscripts of the New Testament there is no pariclytos (praised one,) so there is no textual evidence for this, but this doesn't stop them from holding to this view.

Sura 16:102 and Sura 26:192-194 says Mohammed’s call was issued by the Holy Spirit who appeared to Mohammed. According to their teaching he is the angel Gabriel who also appeared to him in Sura 2:97 (also called the angel in 19:17). In other places in the Koran he is God's own breath, Surat al-Hyjr 15:29, and the divine inspiration The Bee 16:2. According the Bible the Comforter is the Holy Spirit who is God. This conflict certainly shows the biblical illiteracy of the Koran's author who took biblical terminology to mean something completely different.

Mani an Iranian philosopher and false prophet/apostle originated in Persia in the early 200’s. Mani had issued his own Scriptures and had set forth a "new law" for his community and had his scriptures in 7 major works. Mani synthesized Persian, Christian, and Buddhist ideas and became a major influence of religion in the world in its time. Mani had claimed that he was the last in the succession of messengers from God, that he was the greatest of prophets. In the Arabic sources his followers called him “the Seal of the Prophets” (the Same as with Baha’u’llah in the 1840’s). He claimed to be the Paraclete sent by the Father of light. Mohammed also claimed to be the Comforter promised by Jesus. This is a held belief by all Muslims today for validating the Qur'anic claim of Muhammad's arrival was indeed predicted by Jesus in the Bible (Surah 7.157, 61.6).   It is affirmed that Mani gave himself out as an apostle of Christ, of his very nature, as the Comforter, the Holy Spirit whom Jesus had promised, and as Christ himself. (Andrae, Mohommed: The Man and his Faith, p.104). Mani claimed to become the apostle at age 24, Mani also taught “Christ appears as merely a prophet and is not really incarnate.” (Elwell’s Dictionary p.683)

Another Persian prophet after Mohammed, Baha’u’lla, claimed in 1840’s to be the comforter that we have been waiting for. Everyone wants to be the Holy Spirit. Allah is not the Holy Spirit. Islam's Holy Spirit is not the same as the Bibles . The Holy Spirit in the Koran is the angel Gabriel, the comforter is not the same as the Holy Spirit in the Koran.

Islam takes Mk.1:7 and explains that Jesus prophesied of Mohammed as “there comes One after me who is mightier than I.” These words are by John the baptizer not Jesus. This points to Jesus as he was identified by John and began to preach the gospel afterwards. John even identifies him as this when he cried out in John 1:15 “This is he of whom I said “He who comes after me is preferred before me”

The Bible- Jesus said in John 14:26 “ But the Comforter, which is the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Notice the comforter is the Holy Spirit, what's more is the very purpose of this helper is to bear witness to the truth who is Jesus. John 14:17 “ Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”

This helper Jesus and the Father would send would be in Christians and abide with them forever. What is Mohammed doing living in Christians even today after being dead 16 centuries ? how would they know him if he was not yet born?
John 20:22 “And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” Remember Jesus said in Jn.14: 26 “ But the Comforter, which is the Holy Spirit,- this should settle the matter of whether it is another person or spirit.

John 16:13-14 “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. “He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.
Jesus tells us that the Spirit will not speak on His own authority (v. 14) but will say What Jesus says . His purpose, He will glorify Jesus. Verse 16 says that He will take what is Jesus' and declare it unto you.

The purpose of the helper, the comforter from the Bible was to conform someone to the image of Christ as he lives in the believer. Not to gather armies or take over what is perceived as paganism and idolatry by force.

In Sura 33:40 Mohammed says of himself that he is the apostle of God, the seal of the prophets. This means that he supersedes Jesus and Jesus is an inferior prophet. He also is speaking on his own authority which is something that Jesus said his helper will not do. (Jesus also said that John the Baptist is the greatest prophet ever among men.).

One of the arguments for Mohammed being the helper is that Jesus would send another of the same kind (like Himself). Since Muslims look upon Jesus as only a man, a prophet, this can only mean that He is sending another man. They neglect Jesus' deity and the fact that He pre-existed as God in the substance of spirit and that this was His eternal nature. He took upon Himself a human nature as an addition but He always existed as God. The Bible clearly teaches that the Holy Spirit is also God and that when Jesus said that He would send another like Himself it was to be of the same kind (eternal), in like nature. The Spirit would be with us forever which is something only God can do. So according to the Bible's definition the Holy Spirit is the same one as the comforter. How do we know this? Acts.1:4-5 tells us it is the Holy Spirit, as well as John 16 which Jesus called the Spirit of truth. Also in John 14 which in vs.16 he calls him the comforter, and in vs.17 he is called the Spirit of truth, speaking of the same one. So it is clear he is a Spirit the Holy one, which is God .

The timing of when the helper would be sent certainly contradicts the Koran. Jesus said that it “would not be many days from now” in Acts 1:4-5.
This meant at the close of the 40 days that he appeared after the resurrection. And in v.8 “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” The comforter was sent to Jerusalem- the purpose is to bear testimony of Jesus. We know that this was fulfilled at the Day of Pentecost 50 days after His crucifixion, after he resurrected according to the eyewitnesses. Mohammed did not come until 600 years later so this would mean that the disciples did not have the Comforter (paraclete), nor do we today, since Mohammed is no longer here.

Another Biblical event that makes this even more illogical is that the paraclete, who is the Holy Spirit, was brooding over the waters in Gen. 1 and taking part in creation. It is obvious that this cannot be Mohammed. The Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit is none other than God himself. The Bible teaches He is omnipresent as well as all powerful. It was by the Holy Spirit that generated the egg in Mary to conceive the body for the Son of God. This certainly is not Mohammed doing this. Also, the Comforter would be in us. Christians will all have in them the same Holy Spirit. How could this be Mohammed? He was a flesh and blood person who no longer is alive. How could he inhabit Christians, of all people, who do not believe in His teachings? the fact is that the comforter is only given to those who believe the gospel, that Jesus died for their sins and rose again. This is what would make them a Christian, by having the Holy Spirit for only Those who believe receive the comforter.

All one has to do is read the book of Acts to see who the Holy Spirit (paracletos) is and how He works. He convicts men of their sin and is the power behind miracles from God. The word paracletos also has another meaning, advocate, which the Koran only attributes to God.

Despite all this evidence, the Muslim's insist that the paraclete would be a person of flesh and blood and not a Spirit who is God Himself. Even if we concede at this point for the sake of continuing our dialogue, the question we need to ask a Muslim is, is Jesus a prophet? They would of course respond that Mohammed said he was. Can a prophet lie? They would answer in the negative. Then if Jesus is a true prophet then whatever he said should be heeded. Jesus claimed to be the only way to God. If Jesus is right then Mohammed is wrong. If Jesus is wrong, Mohammed is still wrong, because he (Mohammed), said, he is right. So if Jesus is a true prophet he said heaven and earth would pass away before the word would. Then the word is not corrupted but preserved, because Jesus was a true prophet. And we should believe true prophets.
