Did Jesus not tell the truth or change his mind when he said I am not yet going up to this feast in John 7:8? Jesus said in John 7:8 You go up to the feast. I am not yet going up to this feast, because my time is not yet fulfilled. In John 7:8-10, Jesus says He would not go to the festival, but He does go to the festival later on. Did Jesus intentionally lie ? In v.9 When we further read in context- Having said these things to them, he stayed in Galilee. You go up to the feast. I am not yet going up to this feast, He does not say that he will not go, but he will not go yet, as with the other disciples. John 7:10-11: But when his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly, but as it were in secret. The Jews therefore sought him at the feast, and said, "Where is he?" Jesus intent all along was not to go with his disciples. If we go back a few verses we read his own families response to him- John 7:4: For no one does anything in secret, and himself seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, reveal yourself to the world." He did not go to the feast to manifest himself to the people as his brothers asked, Six months later at the Passover, He did manifest himself to Israel as the Messiah by his entry into Jerusalem at the correct feats (Unleaven bread, Passover) because his time was fulfilled. So Jesus did not lie but was actually answering them directly about his intentions as he postponed going so he could arrive separate from them.. |
