*Many claim that because Jesus had a seamless undergarment (John 19) it is evidence that Jesus was rich while he was on earth. Although He wore this garment it is never mentioned throughout His ministry or by his disciples until the crucifixion. No one ever made a big deal of this like the prosperity teachers do today. We wouldn’t even know He had a seamless garment except for what took place at the cross- “And when they crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting lots for them to determine what every man should take” (Mark 15:24). Normally each soldier would get a piece of the person’s attire. The Scripture also says they divided the other garments of Jesus (John 19:23) they didn’t rip them up, why? Because there were 4 guards and they instead cast lots that Scripture was to be fulfilled. So where did this garment come from? Luke 8:3 seems to tell us- “and Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others who provided for Him from their substance." We see several wealthy women who funded Jesus’ ministry; this garment was probably a gift or bought for him. This proves that Jesus was not rich because he needed funding, and possessing this robe does in no way proves He is wealthy. Again Scripture teaches us how He lived and how the apostles that were trained by Him lived. He was not flamboyant. How much of a wardrobe did he have? He didn’t have a different seamless garment for everyday use but the same one worn throughout the week and throughout His ministry. Just because Jesus owned a garment like this doesn’t mean he was rich; it was probably made for him as a gift. |
