How do we know when prophecy is fulfilled? There are patterns in Scripture that often repeat themselves. If a portion of Scripture in reference to a prophecy takes place it does not mean it is complete, all that is spoken must be accomplished. There are many examples of both the first and second coming of the messiah put together in the same Scripture. Even the Jews that wrote and studied the Scripture did not know at the time that they would be separated. Today with the completion of the revelation we can understand this. Jesus said "Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. "For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. (Matt 5:17-18) Then He said to them, "These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me." (Luke 24:44) The word fulfilled means to complete. Prophecies often have more than one Scripture and is spoken from different books. In order for us to say the prophecy has been accomplished it must be completed exactly as it is written in all the Scripture for it to be fulfilled. Consider the virgin birth. One must take all the scriptures on it beginning with Gen. 3:15 - the seed of the woman, the only time in history this occurred. Isa.7:14 a sign where he will be called Immanuel. Isa 9:6 the who- a son given, a child born; where the government of God will rest upon. Micah 5:2 where he would specifically be born. To say this was fulfilled all the requirements spoken of would be met. This is how we know that prophecy has been fulfilled in the past and will be fulfilled in the future. |
