Was the burial cloth on Jesus a singular body wrap? Jn. 20:7 says Jesus' wrap was in two parts... When Jesus was first taken to his burial we read Matt. 27:59 “When Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth.”Also Mark 15:46 ‘ Then he bought fine linen, took Him down, and wrapped Him in the linen” (Lk.23:53). This is singular cloth which would cover the whole body, front and back. John 19:38-41 we read of Joseph came and took the body of Jesus. And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury . Meaning he came with the women, Luke 23:55-56 “ And the women who had come with Him from Galilee followed after , and they observed the tomb and how His body was laid. Then they returned and prepared spices and fragrant oils. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.” This shows this is another wrapping on him after the original cloth that Joseph first wrapped and took Jesus in. This implies wrapped with winding sheets. We see this in the case of Lazarus John 11:44 “ And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with grave clothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth.” This gives us insight to have the Jews wrapped the dead. Luke 24:12 Peter ran to the tomb; and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying by themselves.” Also in John 20:6-7 “Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there, and the handkerchief t hat had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, (plural) but folded together in a place by itself.” This handkerchief is something no other writer mentions, so more than one linen cloth is mentioned and the handkerchief is for the face. These coincide together; these are not half cloths for upper or lower body or for each side top and bottom. So what we can conclude, most likely the original cloth of Joseph covered the top and bottom of Jesus when he first carried him away and the strips and handkerchief were added on afterwards as the scripture says. All of these were left as proof that he had risen. The question also comes up about the Shroud which is not linen wrappings, the possibility can explained with Joseph’s burial cloth that Jesus was first wrapped in. I’m not saying the shroud is definitely authentic but it does reflect the Biblical record of burial. Needless to say this will continue to be a debate. |
