p.1 The Testimony of the Torah through the Types of Messiah Yeshua spoke to the religious leaders “You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me” (John 5:39). John 15:26: “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.” Hebrews 10:7: “Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come -- in the volume of the book it is written of Me-- to do Your will, O God.’” (a Quote of Psalm 40:6-8) In Jn.8:18: “I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.” So Jesus refers to the Scripture- the Holy Spirit and the Father as witnesses of who He is. He is the goal, the completion of the law and all that is in the book (Rom.10:4). JESUS CHRIST (Yeshua Ha Mashiach) is the FOCUS of the SCRIPTURE. Throughout Yeshua’s (Jesus) ministry, He used what God gave Israel previously to identify himself as their Messiah. Besides certain miracles that only the Messiah could do, i.e. curing leprosy, and healing a man born blind (John 9:32- Isa. 43:7-9; Isa. 35:3-6) there were numerous other ways to identify who the Messiah is. The practices given in the Old Testament became part of their culture and religious life of which Israel held for 1500 years, since Moses and until Jesus came. These practices had a twofold purpose- to keep Israel in relationship with God through their priesthood, sacrifices and tabernacle/ temple. With the Old Testament completed approximately 400 years before Messiah came, its teaching on the Tabernacle and Feast Days were given to practice then and so that Israel could recognize who the Messiah is when He comes. As Jesus spoke in John 5:39 All the word testify of Me” All the patterns, types were symbols shadows of the true substance to keep Israel in relationship with God. While John the baptizer was in jail he questioned what was taking place in Jesus’ ministry, because the kingdom was not being setup. He sent a messenger to ask Yeshua, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?” Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: ”The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them. ”And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me” (Mt. 11:3-6 fulfilling Luke 4). He could not understand the two comings of the Messiah; the first coming as the Son of Joseph (the suffering one) the other as the Son of David (the ruling King). This is one of the main types used in the Old Testament that give us insight into the identity of the Messiah. Jesus revealed this very thing to the two disciples on the Emmaus road as he rebuked them because they did not “believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?" And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself” (Luke 24:25-27). Typology are like previews of the real purpose and function that is to come. That is- they were shadows of the true substance. As a light seen far away compared to a light that is present among them (Jn.1:12). Typology becomes a fascinating study in Scripture that shows its unity among the many authors and the intent woven throughout its pages. Jesus quoted and referred to nearly every book in the Old Testament and he used the quotes in numerous ways, one of which is illustrating that He is the topic of the typology. Once one understands the principle and application they can see the correlation in the New Testament easily. The anticipation of the Messiah appearing among Israel that was under Roman occupation was high. Let me cite several examples: In Luke 2:25-30 we read of Simeon a just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Israel, (meaning the long awaited Messiah). The Holy Spirit revealed to him that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Messiah. V. 27-29 led by the Spirit into the temple. “And when the parents brought in the Child Jesus, to do for Him according to the custom of the law, he took Him up in his arms and blessed God and said: "Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace, According to Your word; For my eyes have seen Your salvation. The Messiah was to be the one who would save – as the angel told Mary “she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). John 1:41-42: “He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, "We have found the Messiah " (which is translated, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus.” John 1:44-45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote--Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." Jesus meeting a Samaritan women at Jacob’s well, John 4:13-16 “Jesus answered and said to her, "Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life." The woman said to Him, "Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw." she tells him: “I know that Messiah is coming (he that is called the Christ): when he arrives, he will declare unto us all things.” The Lord responded: “I who am speaking to you am he” (John 4:25-26). Jesus asked his disciples "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered and said to Him, "You are the Christ." Then He charged them that they should tell no one about Him” (Mark 8:29-3). Some were able to identify who Yeshua was by how He spoke and how He lived. Others needed a revelation like Peter. Yeshua would use the Old Testament as his source to let the people know his identity. This is one of the reasons typology is a fascinating component of the Scripture. Typology or allegory (and symbols) illustrate the life of the Messiah in the lives of others and gives further understanding to doctrine when they it is kept in its cultural historical context. Besides using literal examples of everyday life in stories to illustrate truth such as in parables, types and symbols from the Old Testament were often used by Yochanon (John) and Yeshua (Jesus) in their ministry for identification. When Jesus came to be baptized by John so that He would be revealed to Israel (Mt.3), John introduced Yeshua to Israel as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. We are most familiar with Jesus as a lamb. This antitype comes from Exodus 12. Four times in the New Testament we are told He is the lamb. The Passover lamb is the antitype of Jesus as the Lamb of God. He alone is the Lamb of God (not the lamb of men) could only take away our sins. Identifying him with Isaiah’s prophecy of God’s servant in Isa. 53. Passover is mentioned 50 times in the Old Testament, 27 times in the New Testament it is the most mentioned feast of all 7 feast days. In Passover you are to begin by purging out the leaven. (Old Testament - Exodus 12:14-20; 13:3. New Testament - 1 Corinthians 5:7-8; 1 John 1:9). The first Passover feast eaten by the Jews in Egypt was to become a memorial feast for the people’s deliverance from bondage. Yeshua explains that the Lord's Supper (communion) in the New Testament corresponds to Christ. Both the Passover feast and the Lord's Supper have many things in common. They have the same meaning: (A memorial: Passover was to remember Egypt, while the Lord's Supper, to remember Christ's death (Exod. 12:26;1 Cor. 11:25). It looks to the past and the future, back at what he has done and looks forward to when He comes. Jesus identifies the symbols as being Himself, and promises -that HE IS COMING AGAIN. The first time He came in humility as the son of Joseph, the suffering servant- the next time He comes as a lion, the ruling King who will judge. Jesus said he was the true BREAD: Jesus was born in Bethlehem (David called it the House of Bread) and called himself the bread of life. Unleaven bread is also called the Aphikomen (bread of affliction) at Pesach (Passover) and the Passover cannot end until each person has eaten a small piece of it. By doing this they are remembering the lamb. The bread Jesus broke at the last supper was unleaven bread. Paul describes the unleaven bread as fulfilled in Christ 1 Cor.5: 7-8: “Cleanse out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. When Paul spoke this, the Jews knew exactly what he was talking about. Be cleansed in order to keep the Passover. He says in the next verse 8: “Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened [bread] of sincerity and truth.” In communion we are to search ourselves to see if there is any sin in us (1 Cor. 11:27-28) and repent, this is how we keep the feast. Each feast required a young, innocent and perfect lamb: (Ex 12:5/ John 1:29; 1 Peter 1:19). The Jews were not allowed to break any bones on the Passover lamb when they ate it (Exod. 12:46; Num. 9:12), whatever was left is to burned with fire, the fire symbolizes Gods wrath against sin. In antitype the "Passover lamb" on the cross had no bone broken as prophesied in Ps. 34:20 = fulfilled in Jn. 19:33-36. The blood of the Passover lamb was to be painted on the outside of the door so that when the death angel came to judge all of Egypt, he would "Passover" that house and not kill the occupants. The hyssop was first dipped in the basin and then a sign of the cross was painted on the door, the top and two sides. The first Passover becomes a picture of the future suffering Messiah, with the crown of thorns on his head both hands outstretched and his feet pierced with nails. Yeshua’s sacrifice occurred on the very same feast day –Passover, thus he is rightly called the Lamb of God. 1 Peter 1:19 he writes that we have been purchased “with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot” (Heb.9:11-10:18 the offering of Jesus’ sinless blood fulfills Passover. The blood of the true Passover lamb is to set us free from bondage and give forgiveness of our sins, so that when Judgment day comes, we will not be judged (Matthew 26:27). God had freed Israel from bondage by the blood of the lamb, Jesus freed Israel and all who believe by the blood of the lamb. As Moses led Israel out from Egypt, Jesus lead us out of a life of bondage to sin. In Leviticus 16:29-34 we have another antitype of Christ called the "goat of atonement" and the "scape-goat" The priest took two goats. The first was goat was killed as a sin offering (Lev. 16:15) its blood was brought inside the veil and sprinkled on the mercy seat (Lev 16:19) he shall sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times”– the priest laid his hands on the live goats head and symbolically had the goat carry the sins of the people. Leviticus 16:21 “confess over it all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions, concerning all their sins, putting them on the head of the goat, and shall send it away into the wilderness.” The scape-goat was driven out within Jerusalem (Lev.16:10) Jesus was crucified and buried outside the gate of the city of Jerusalem. But the picture of this sacrificial event becomes more interesting. In the New Testament, Hebrews 9:11-13 goes on to say, "But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things to come, He entered through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation; and not through the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption." The Tabernacle is God's Dwelling place, God patterned all it furnishings. Heb.8:5; 9:23 patterned after the things in the heavens… The tabernacle is a pattern of the real substance (Heb 9:21 24). 'Figures of the true' - the Holy Places made with hands are a model of the true reality. (2 Chr. 6- Jer. 17:12; Ps 24:3- Rev 15:1.-5). v.24 the earthly showing a heavenly truth a model of the true reality, they are shadows of the true light. The purpose of the Tabernacle was to contain the Shekinah Glory, where God dwelt. He (Christ) is the greater tabernacle made by God, not of fallen creation. John 1:14 he says his glory is now made visible “The word became flesh and ‘dwelt’ among us.” The word for dwelt in Greek is skeinei, which is from the Hebrew mishkhan, which is the same root as shekinah. It means to tabernacle, as God dwelt in the Old Testament tabernacle. “He tabernacled among us.” No longer would God dwell in a temple made with hands, but a living temple. The Veil (Exod. 26:31-35) was in type Christ's human body that shelled the Holy one (Matt. 26:26; 27:50). Hebrews 6:19-20“…which enters the Presence behind the veil , where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.” Hebrews 9:3 “behind the second veil, the part of the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of All” The veil of the earthly temple was supernaturally torn in two when Christ died from the top down (Matt. 27:51), granting instant access to God to everyone who approaches on the ground of faith in Him. Hebrews 10:19-21 “Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil , that is, His flesh, and having a High Priest over the house of God” He was innocent and sinless yet suffered as if He had sinned. Jesus is our scape-goat. In essence, you can identify Jesus with all the sacrifices even the burnt offering. All the blood offering all the free will offerings are types that speak of the one who would come. 2 Corinthians 5:21: He made him who knew no sin to be the sin-offering for us, the chastisement of our peace was laid “upon” Him (Isaiah 53:5). He was made to be sin for us in a JUDICIAL sense, a vicarious atonement; as our substitution He suffered in our place and took our penalty of our judgment, treated as if he himself sinned.Yeshua spoke of himself as the door to the sheepfold in John 10:1-2 “he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door , but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.” V:7-8: John “I am the door. Anyone who does not enter by me is a thief and a robber.” “I AM THE DOOR, BY ME IF ANY MAN ENTER IN, HE SHALL BE SAVED AND GO IN AND OUT TO FIND PASTURE.” Here we again see Old Testament symbolism; He is the shepherd who guards his own sheep from predators. When man was first driven out of the garden a cherubim was placed at the east of Eden, and to guard the way back into the Garden, there was only one way in (Gen 3:24). During the Exodus journey the 12 tribes of Israel camped around the tabernacle, inside it was the holy of Holies is where the sacrificial blood of atonement would be brought by the high priest once a year. There was only one way into the Tabernacle was through the tribe of Judah camping at the entrance located on the east. Jesus is of the tribe of Judah, He is the door, the “only” way to God. The high priest becomes “the way” in the New Testament. Jesus said in Jn.14:6: “No one comes to the Father except through Me.” In the person of Melchizedek Jesus is prefigured in his name (King of righteousness and peace) and His spiritual offices. Melchizedek was a king (Gen. 14:18), a priest (Gen. 14:18), and a prophet (Gen. 14:19), Jesus holds to all three offices eternally but He functions in them chronologically. He came as a prophet (John 4:44), today He is currently holding the office and functioning as the high priest (Heb.5:6, 10). At His second coming He will be ruling as King of all kings. He came as a lamb who would sacrifice his life, the body he took at his incarnation fulfilling unleaven bread (a sinless life) and Passover (the sacrificial lamb). At the second coming He returns as the son of David to set up the kingdom, coming as a lion.In Joseph is a type of the Messiah Jesus is also identified as the Messiah of Israel in typology by life situations of other saints. God used certain saints, (though flawed) to give illustrations of the coming Messiah. One of the most powerful illustrations of the Messiah and having the most numerous types is with Joseph who suffered by his brothers hands. Jesus is called the son of Joseph, 'the suffering servant.' These are but a few examples: Genesis 37:5-9: “Now Joseph had a dream, and he told it to his brothers; and they hated him even more. 6 So he said to them, "Please hear this dream which I have dreamed: There we were, binding sheaves in the field. Then behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and indeed your sheaves stood all around and bowed down to my sheaf." And his brothers said to him, "Shall you indeed reign over us? Or shall you indeed have dominion over us?" So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words. Jesus telling a parable Luke 19:11-12: “because He was near Jerusalem and because they thought the kingdom of God would appear immediately. He then gives the story of "A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and to return” In the end he says inV.14 “But his citizens hated him, and sent a delegation after him, saying, 'We will not have this man to reign over us. Both Joseph and Jesus are rejected for having a position of rulership. Joseph tells his brothers of the exalted position he would receive they hated him for his testifying against them. Jesus is hated for his testimony of his exaltation to his brethren. Luke 22:66-71: “the council demands to tell them if he is the Christ, tell us.” But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will by no means believe. “And if I also ask you, you will by no means answer Me or let Me go. “Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God. Then they all said, “Are You then the Son of God?” So He said to them, “You rightly say that I am. And they said, “What further testimony do we need? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.” Jesus reveals to his brothers his ascent to glory and they hated him even the more. Matt 24:30 “Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.” Joseph’s brethren were jealous of his Fathers love and favor toward him. Genesis 37:23-25: “So it came to pass, when Joseph had come to his brothers, that they stripped Joseph of his tunic, the tunic of many colors that was on him. Then they took him and cast him into a pit. And the pit was empty; there was no water in it.” Joseph was betrayed by his Jewish brothers into the hands of the gentile but took the betrayal and turned it around and made it a way for all Israel and the world to be saved. Jesus was betrayed by his Jewish brethren into the hands of gentiles. Luke 18:32: “For He will be delivered to the Gentiles and will be mocked and insulted and spit upon.” Matt 20:19: “and deliver Him to the Gentiles to mock and to scourge and to crucify. And the third day He will rise again.” Joseph’s brothers conspired against him as did the Messiahs brethren. Joseph is betrayed by his brothers for twenty pieces of silver (Gen. 37:28). Silver represents the price of redemption. (The Levites had to redeem the first born with 30 pieces of silver). Jesus is betrayed by his brother yehuda, for thirty pieces of silver (Matt.26:15). Gen.39:11-15 Joseph is tempted and endures- Mt.4:1-11 Jesus is also tempted and is victorious. Gen.39:13-18 Joseph is accused falsely-Mt.29 59-65 Jesus is also accused falsely. Both are condemned with two criminals. Joseph was punished with the cup bearer and the baker – Jesus is condemned with two criminals, one perished and one was saved. Josephs dreams of 3 days (Gen.40:12-22); like Joseph, Jesus had 3 days to prove who He is (Mk.8:31, 15:29; Jn.20:20). Joseph predicted one would live the other die (Gen.40:21-22). Luke 23:43: And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.” Jesus predicts one would die the other would have life. Gen. 41:14 Joseph is raised by the king in one day- from a place of death to a place of glory. Eph. 1:19-20 Jesus is raised to his place of exaltation, God “raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places,” both are raised from the place of condemnation to glory in a single day. Pharaoh named Joseph "Zaphnath Paaneah" "the-salvation-of-the-life or world" (from Barnes' commentary), “support or sustainer of life” (from Keil & Delitzsch Commentary on the Old Testament). Which can also be translated the food of life or of the living. Yeshua is called the bread of life (John 6:35). Israel was fed miraculously manna from heaven- Jesus who is the true manna from heaven came to earth to do God’s will feeding the people the true food, his word. Jn.6:33: “For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” As the manna sustained Israel through the wilderness, Jesus is the bread of life we live by. Like the Antitype Joseph was 30 on entering on his public ministry, Jesus was the same age when he entered His ministry (Luke 3:23). Joseph’s brothers did not recognize him at first but at the second time when they were brought before him they did. When Joseph reveals himself to his brothers they weep. When Yeshua is revealed to his brethren they too will weep as one weeps for an only son (Zech.12:10), much more can be said about the life of Joseph who suffered. The one they betrayed is now the exalted one that saves them. Gen 47:25 So they said, “You have saved our lives; let us find favor in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh’s servants.” Joseph is acknowledged to be savior and ruler- Jesus is also. After being exalted Joseph takes a gentile bride - Jesus also takes a gentile bride. The book of Ruth is read in at Hag shavout feast of weeks (Pentecost) it is the story of a Jewish man taking a gentile bride. Joseph had a coat of many colors made by his father out of his love for him. Genesis 37:3-4: “Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age. Also he made him a tunic of many colors. But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peaceably to him.” In the same manner, the Father speaks of Jesus as his only son in whom he is well pleased. The robe of many colors consisted of different materials woven together as one. Similarly, Jesus saves people from all tribes and nations he brings people of every color tribe and race together in his body. p.2 The Testimony of the Torah -the Types of Messiah
