Is fire God’s glory, or comets?

Mike Adams, “He would burn Israelites alive in giant fireballs when they disobeyed him. He would just obliterate people who were unclean, who tried to enter the tabernacle. I mean, there are numerous examples of this” (061 - Human civilization is God's experiment)

No, there are not numerous examples.

Adams says of the judgments in Revelation,“and fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them. Fire came down from God out of heaven. What is that? More comets.” (063 - God's comets DEFEAT the Devil, the Beast and the Anti-Christ sorcerer)

Adams has been influenced by a book,“the Comets of God,” by Jeffrey Goodman, who he says “connects the biblical concept of the Day of the Lord and the Battle of Armageddon to cometary activity. the stars falling from the sky, the great earthquake, and the disappearance of mountains and islands, are all the result of a series of cometary impacts.

The plagues, such as the Nile turning to blood, the boils, and the hail mixed with fire, could be explained by the dust, debris, and chemical compounds released by the comet. the pillar of cloud and fire that led the Israelites through the desert was a comet.”

Both fire and brimstone are mentioned 20 times in the Old Testament, and it is NOT always comets. The first time it is mentioned is in Gen 19:24 "Then the LORD rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the LORD out of the heavens.;So He overthrew those cities, all the plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground

While this may in fact be comets, we need to take into consideration these are directly from God. I agree that there are comets or meteors mentioned in the Old Testament.

According to Adams,God can drop like small space rocks and destroy a city. Or he can drop large space rocks, mountains, flaming mountains, which is mentioned specifically in the book of Revelation” (061 - Human civilization is God's experiment)

He can, but did he? That is what needs to be proven. Every time a fire appears out of heaven, it does not mean it is a comet. That would be a ridiculous conclusion.

This particular event is a good possibility in Luke 17:29 on the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all.”

Lets look at Scripture to see if any of these claims are even remotely true. Fire, flames, etc. need to be kept in the context in which it is given. For example, we have fiery trials (1 Peter 4:12) .

Ex 13:21-22 “the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night. He did not take away the pillar of cloud by day or the pillar of fire by night from before the people.

The Lord had two means to lead over a million people out of Egypt to the Promised Land: the pillar of fire was consistently there, at night, and the cloud did the same thing in the day. This was not a comet nor did it act like one, leading Israel through the wilderness.

Was this a comet, day after day, appearing at the same time each night for years? The answer is found in the word. “The LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light,” Num. 14:14 “in a pillar of fire by night.”

Neh. 9:12 “And by night with a pillar of fire, To give them light on the road Which they should travel.”

Are comets pillars of clouds too?

2 Chron. 7:1-2 “When Solomon had finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the LORD filled the temple.”

Where did this take place?  V:2-3 “And the priests could not enter the house of the LORD, because the glory of the LORD had filled the LORD's house. When all the children of Israel saw how the fire came down, and the glory of the LORD on the temple” If this was a comet or a meteor it would have destroyed the temple, its God’s glory that looks like, or can act like fire.

We have this same type of fire of judgment when “the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice” (1 Kings 18:38), which is his visible glory. No this was not a comet? Think of all the times you have to explain a comet coming down from heaven for each one of these examples of fire taking place.

1 Kings 18:38-40” Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood and the stones and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench. Now when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, "The LORD, He is God! The LORD, He is God!"

2 Kings 1:12 “Elijah answered and said to them, "If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men." And the fire of God came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty.” So Elijah who is a prophet has God with him but God sends a comet to do this? When Elijah confronted the 50 false prophets in 2 Kings 1:12 was this a comet?  Is God not able to cause a fire? After all he created all things.

How do we know this? From Moses and other prophets’ descriptions. Ex 3:2 “the Angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush.” Are we to believe this is a comet that burned in the bush and talked with Moses?

And this same fire (God’s glory) minimally appeared above the heads of those in the upper room Acts 2:3-4 “Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.

Are these itty bitty comets on the disciples inside a room?

Dan 7:9-10 speaks of the Ancient of Days “His throne was a fiery flame, Its wheels a burning fire” Are these comets too? Why can’t they be God’s glory engulfing what is around him, like the bible teaches?

Ezek. 8:1-2 as “I sat in my house with the elders of Judah sitting before me, that the hand of the Lord GOD fell upon me there. Then I looked, and there was a likeness, like the appearance of fire--from the appearance of His waist and downward, fire; and from His waist and upward, like the appearance of brightness, like the color of amber.”

This is a vision of the Son of man in heaven who looks like fire, in his glorified state.

John sees the Son of Man in heaven in Rev 19:11-16 describing, “His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns.” Jesus does not have comets for eyes.

Fire

God was continually present as a pillar of fire by night to lead and protect his people (10 times it is mentioned). Is this a comet or a meteor leading the people to the land? Let’s look at the Scripture and ask the question of this being comets or a supernaturally caused from God himself.

Zech. 2:5 “For I,' says the LORD, 'will be a wall of fire all around her, and I will be the glory in her midst.'"   God actually tells us the fire is his glory, not a comet.

Ex 19:18 when the Lord came down “on Mount Sinai was completely in smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire. Its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked greatly.”

Was this a comet hitting the mountain? Did the Lord come down in a comet? As a comet, or is it himself, his presence in glory?  V.9 I come to you in the thick cloud” (Ex 19:9)

v.16 the 3rd day, “there were thunderings and lightnings, and a thick cloud on the mountain; and the sound of the trumpet was very loud.” V.20-21the LORD called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.”

Ex 24:16, specifically states, “ the glory of the LORD rested on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days.” V.17 scripture says the “sight of the glory of the LORD was like a consuming fire on the top of the mountain in the eyes of the children of Israel.” This is his effulgence, his glory being described. His glory is mentioned well over 300 times.

Numerous times fire is spoken of as his glory, his presence (2 Chron.7:3;

There are also metaphors used of fire. Prov. 25:22  “For so you will heap coals of fire on his head, (are the coals comets?)

Jesus speaks of this same thing of coals, is he saying you have comets come down on their heads? Paul also speaks of this metaphorically in Rom. 12:20 “if an enemy is hungry feed him; if thirsty give drinkFor in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.”

Fire from heaven as judgment from God

We do have examples of God’s judgment using fire either from him or out of heaven.

2 Sam 22:9 “because He was angry. Smoke went up from His nostrils, And devouring fire from His mouth; Coals were kindled by it.”

Ex 9:24-25 “there was hail, and fire mingled with the hail, so very heavy that there was none like it in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation.”

This can be comets, which are directly sent as a judgment from the Lord upon Egypt. But this should not be expanded to the plagues all being from comets, especially as Moses is confronting Pharaoh and his gods by the true God.

Numbers 11:1-3 “when the people complained, it displeased the LORD; for the LORD heard it, and His anger was aroused. So the fire of the LORD burned among them, and consumed some in the outskirts of the camp. Then the people cried out to Moses, and when Moses prayed to the LORD, the fire was quenched. So he called the name of the place Taberah, because the fire of the LORD had burned among them.”

Job 1:16 While he was still speaking, another also came and said, "The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them; and I alone have escaped to tell you!”

Ps 11:6 “Upon the wicked He will rain coals; Fire and brimstone and a burning wind Shall be the portion of their cup.

Ps 18:13 The LORD also thundered from heaven, and the Most High uttered His voice, Hailstones and coals of fire.”

We see that the bible distinguishes when something is different

Ps 21:9-10 “You shall make them as a fiery oven in the time of Your anger; The LORD shall swallow them up in His wrath, And the fire shall devour them. Their offspring You shall destroy from the earth, And their descendants from among the sons of men.”

Ps 29:7-8 The voice of the LORD divides the flames of fire. The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness”

Ps 50:3-4 our God shall come, and shall not keep silent; A fire shall devour before Him, And it shall be very tempestuous all around Him. He shall call to the heavens from above, And to the earth, that He may judge His people”

Ps 68:2 As smoke is driven away, So drive them away; As wax melts before the fire, So let the wicked perish at the presence of God.” Is the presence of the Lord a meteor or is he as the bible describes

Ps 83:13-15 like the chaff before the wind! As the fire burns the woods, And as the flame sets the mountains on fire, So pursue them with Your tempest, And frighten them with Your storm.”

Ps 97:3-4 “A fire goes before Him, And burns up His enemies round about. His lightnings light the world; The earth sees and trembles.”

Ps 104:4 “Who makes His angels spirits, His ministers a flame of fire. “ (Heb.1:7)

Here we have an example of fire used as a metaphor for angels that do judgment. Adams says they are comets.

Neither one of these describe comets. Ps 7:13 He makes His arrows into fiery shafts.

Ps 105:32-33 “And flaming fire in their land. He struck their vines also, and their fig trees,

And splintered the trees of their territory.”

Ps 106:17-18 “The earth opened up and swallowed Dathan, And covered the faction of Abiram.

A fire was kindled in their company; The flame burned up the wicked.”

Ezek. 21:31-32 “I will pour out My indignation on you; I will blow against you with the fire of My wrath, And deliver you into the hands of brutal men who are skillful to destroy. You shall be fuel for the fire”

If this fire is a comet, how are they still alive delivered into other men afterwards. In this instance Its speaking metaphorically about God’s hot wrath.

Ezek. 38:21-22;I will call for a sword against Gog throughout all My mountains," says the Lord GOD. "Every man's sword will be against his brother. And I will bring him to judgment with pestilence and bloodshed; I will rain down on him, on his troops, and on the many peoples who are with him, flooding rain, great hailstones, fire, and brimstone.”

This certainly can be a comets

Rev. 11:3-6 “I will give power to my two witnesses, who prophecy through half the tribulation clothed in sackcloth" v.4 called two lampstands standing before the God of the earth “And if anyone wants to harm them, fire proceeds from their mouth and devours their enemies. And if anyone wants to harm them, he must be killed in this manner.  These have power to shut heaven, so that no rain falls in the days of their prophecy; and they have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to strike the earth with all plagues, as often as they desire.”

Is the fire from their mouths comets to burn up their enemies?

Judgments in the Book of Revelation

Rev 6:4Another horse, fiery red, went out.

Rev 12:3a great, fiery red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads.

The Book of Revelation does contain fiery judgments that are poured out from heaven, most likely the same kind of the fire and brimstone that God used to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. God will use fire as the means of judgment during the Great Tribulation.

This one most likely shows a meteor Rev. 8:10-11 the third angel sounded: And a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water.”

Rev 9:1 fifth angel sounded: And I saw a star fallen from heaven to the earth. To him was given the key to the bottomless pit.” Clearly this star is identified as a he, a being (Angels used symbolically are called stars) that has the key to unlock the bottomless pit, this is not a comet nor meteor.

What this kind of interpretation of Adams (and Goodman) gives eliminates any supernatural power from God and makes it all a natural occurrence that may or may not be directed by God.

Zeph 1:18 “In the day of the LORD's wrath; But the whole land shall be devoured By the fire of His jealousy, For He will make speedy riddance Of all those who dwell in the land.”

This is not referring to a comet Impact, though if you are using human reasoning to interpret the Bible you can come to this conclusion. To be accurate, we need to keep the Scripture in context and compare scripture to Scripture.

Zeph. 3:8Therefore wait for Me," says the LORD, "Until the day I rise up for plunder; My determination is to gather the nations To My assembly of kingdoms, To pour on them My indignation, All my fierce anger; All the earth shall be devoured With the fire of My jealousy.”

Are the fires of God’s jealousy comets? This is not literal. We need to distinguish the activities and not just generalize the answers to all be comets.

The lake of fire is associated with fire and brimstone as the source of the wicked’s torment Rev 20:11 “The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.”(also Rev.21:8)

“….the fearful, and unbelieving, and abominable, and murderers, and fornicators, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, their part shall be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone; which is the second death.”

Rev 19:20 the beast the false prophet along with those who worshiped his image. “are cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone.”

The lake of fire, which burns with fire and brimstone is not a comet that continually burns? No, it is not. It is the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels”(Matt 25:41)
