Rodney Browne
recommends not to pray!"I loose the touch, there it is , there it is, there it is, let that go right through you, fill that’s it fill that’s it, fill, that’s it, there it is let it bubble out your belly, let it bubble out your belly, there it is. that’s right lady, don't pray let the joy bubble, fill you can pray when you get home, let the joy bubble you too stop praying let the joy bubble out your bubble ... If your praying would have helped, it would have helped you. I said joy, stubborn people, people come all serious and pray, no its not time to pray its not a prayer meeting, get in the joy…"
One of Rodney Howard-Browne's favorite words of advice is not to pray while you're attending one of his joy meetings: "It's not a prayer meeting, You can pray at home." "Don't analyze it, you can't understand what God is doing at these meetings with an analytical mind. The only way you're going to understand what God is doing is with your heart." Interesting that the prophet Jeremiah said that "the heart is deceitfully wicked", as did Jesus.
While here in Hawaii, he said that if you see someone after they leave the building go down and laugh, don't pray for them (Red Hill First Assembly of God). Why would anyone encourage someone not to pray, when God Himself tells us to pray in and for all things always? Can our prayer actually interfere with what God is doing ? If it is from God, then why not pray? God is not divided. He will not hinder Himself. In addition to these facts, prayer is part of our spiritual armor (Eph.6:13-18) to neglect this is to make one open to what may not be of God. But this is his modus operandi.
I also found it difficult to believe that the Holy Spirit would overwhelm and overpower someone to the point that they were incapacitated afterwards. The New Testament has nothing written of this for believers. Browne warns people that the holy ghost will follow them home. An interesting statement if one considers he is already at home living inside us!
It is fascinating that in this movement we see immediate results from someone's prayers or words. By saying "Be filled!" or "laugh" someone can immediately be encompassed by an experience. Or the Spirit can be imparted, and directed by a wave of his hand. The question is, does God act (or react) from ones words in this manner? Or are people this gullible and able to be manipulated by charismatic suggestability. it appears so, all they have to be is lose from laughter and they can be told to do just about anything.
Since these things are occurring inside a church service by someone who is a Christian or claims to be one, then this is believed to be from God. This is not necessarily the case. This is practicing pragmatism. In other words, if it works then it is true or right, even though it is not found in scripture. Experience is not the test of truth. This is especially needed when one experiences the supernatural. All supernatural events must be tested by the word before being accepted.
Their is no encouragement to test what is taking place. He constantly belittles those who would use their mind (which is where our discernment comes from). He calls denominations abominations (a William Branham teaching). What we find is that, if someone disagrees or calls the people to inspect carefully what is being said and practiced, they are labeled as divisive, Pharisees, Sadducees, and "wouldn't sees". This is a direct, derogatory statement concerning any who would appeal for a test. To be a Pharisee means that one is a "son of hell". Nothing could be further from the truth. When the Pharisees disputed with Jesus on His claims and miracles, He pointed to the Word. When Paul reasoned with the Bereans and they contested what he said, they went to the Word as their source of truth to test Paul's words.
What's wrong with someone honestly investigating in the word to determine whether or not an event or happening is Biblical or not? This actually shows that they have integrity and are willing to believe God and not man. If one notices contradictions from what is being taught or experienced, they should, in all good conscience, follow this directive since the Spirit of God leads us into all truth, If a single contradiction is found, then we must consider that something else is in operation. If we are detecting a flaw that will arrest our attention, then, by all means, we should pursue our discerning. If one has doubts, they should consider it possible that it maybe the Spirit. There's nothing wrong with doubting experiences. What we cannot doubt is His Word. Not all doubt is from the enemy and God just might be giving us doubt. A diamond may look to have no flaws at first glance, but if one were to bring it to a jeweler or appraiser to inspect it, as he takes out his magnifying glass he will be able to see how it's cut and see the imperfections. Thus, a full examination is the safest course for a believer. Only those who are not teaching correctly will object to being checked out.
If we went to a doctor when we were in pain and didn't know why, and he told us that we were fine and that there was nothing wrong, would we stop pursuing relief for our pain? No. We would pursue another doctor. If we do this for our physical welfare , then why do we not consider taking the same course of action doing this for our spiritual welfare? If we know ourselves, our actual condition as sinners, and see our propensity to sin as depicted in God's Word, we should pursue testing the experience and then we would be safer from the enemy's schemes. We must be able to admit to ourselves that we can be deceived. None of us are infallible as God is.
Ignorance of our true condition, even with a new life implanted in us, does not give one a blind confidence from God that the enemy can't deceive us and that we are so protected from any falsehood in our lives. We must rely on and go to the Word which steers our course straight and keeps us from drifting.
Because one has a permanent indwelling of God's Spirit does not mean that we are sinless. Not every part of the believer is renewed and freed from the fall by the redemption of Christ's blood. We all have areas that we willfully need to give over to the Lord's control everyday if we are to see victory. Not until we possess a resurrected body will we be fully free from sin, sickness, and deception. We will one day be able to walk in total freedom if we are overcomers. While our position is already with Christ in the heavenly places, we still, in practicality, have to work on our old nature and put on the new man each day. In dealing with deception, we find that the enemy will always tempt with a small taste before having us eat a huge meal that he might offer. None of us would fall for a blatant lie, but the most seditious trappings are when we find much truth wrapped around a little lie. how much arsenic would one consciously eat if they were aware of its presence in their meal? 50 percent? 10 percent? 1 percent? Either way, no matter how much you consume, you will die from ingesting it. Remember arsenic is 99% real food but that 1% can really do you in. Paul says that "a little leaven leavens the whole lump. Purge out the old leaven that you may be a new lump" the reason being that we have a new nature from Christ's sacrifice.
Philippians 2:12 tells us that we are to bring our own salvation to completion. In other words, we are to watch over our own lives. The faithful will always resist false teaching, stand firm and steadfast on God's Word, and expose the lie to others.
According to James 5:19, we are our brother's keepers: "If one among you wanders from the truth and someone turns them back, that person who turns the sinner from his error will save his soul from death and cover a multitude of sins."
Jesse Penn Lewis, who wrote on the extreme actions of the Welsh Revival and the deceptive strategies used by evil spirits against God's people, warns of grave dangers that beset the path of the uninformed enthusiast. Today we see unbridled enthusiasm inside the church under the influence of what is claimed, the "Holy Spirit."
When one attends a service they find the atmosphere as pre pumped. He first convinces people God's presence is in the room for them to expect the unusual. Psychological conditioning is used with statements such as do you need a touch from God pressing for a immediate result. Clichés and buzz words are used such as "there it is", "let it bubble out your belly" as power suggestions to his captive audience that yearns for an experience. Is this what happened at Pentecost? Can you find the apostles saying or teaching this? Using repetitive words is spiritual conditioning to produce an atmosphere for a desired effect.
The scriptures are lifted out of their context, distorted and carefully constructed to fit the manifestations these men want to occur. Like a snowball downhill it soon becomes an avalanche. Experience becomes the modus operandi to knowing God. While Browne may say the meetings are not about manifestations, in practice it certainly is. Many people say it is the joy of the Lord they are receiving, but the joy of the Lord is our strength not weakness; as one is unable to rise off the ground overcome by laughter or paralysis. Sorry, there is no such mention of this in the Scripture as a spiritual experience from God. In fact the Bible has the very opposite to say:
Ecclesiastes 7:4: “The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, But the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.” Jesus said the same thing, we should not be laughing ourselves into an euphoric experience in the house of God. it is irreverent and not from the Lord at all.
The truth is that doctrine does matter. It is what solidifies one into a steady and faithful life in Christ so that when other winds blow, that person is on the foundation and will not be led astray. In 1 Timothy 4:16 we read: "Take heed to yourselves and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you." If we want to be effective inside and outside the church, we must follow the doctrine which unites us with truth. Christ taught true doctrine and He expected the apostles to do the same (Matt. 28:19-20). Is it any less of a call on our lives 2000 years later to do the same?
