The Sabbath is not in the New Covenant You do not get grace or peace through the law, but by only through the Father and Jesus Christ, through the NEW COVENANT. Those who insist on requiring the Sabbath in the new covenant as it was for Israel (only) in the Old Covenant, show their bad bible interpretation skills. They have not been taught the new covenant of grace accurately; some not at all. Some think the Old Testament laws have been synthesized to the new covenant, some even think they as Gentiles become Jews. Where did the apostles teach the Sabbath was mandatory as it was in the Old Testament? They cannot point to one Scripture after the new covenant is ratified that requires the Church to keep the Sabbath as Israel kept the Sabbath under the Old Covenant. It was personal choice. Without the Spirit at work teaching them how to accurately (rightly) divide the word of truth given in the New Testament they are unable to distinguish between the two covenants. One given to Israel only, the second made to both the Jews and the gentiles. Apart from the Old Testament covenant to Israel the Sabbatarian’s that want to bring you into keeping the Old Testament (which they call freedom) have no justification for what they teach. They are no different than Roman Catholics who follow the Pope, and teach extra biblical traditions using bible words. As many follow a woman who claimed to have a vision of the Sabbath in heaven. Under the Old Testament law Num. 15:40 "and that you may remember and do ALL My commandments, and be holy for your God. That was 613 Commandments, not just 10, and the Sabbath was unified in this command. The Bible clearly teaches that the Sabbath was part of the OLD covenant. Exodus 34:27-28: "Then the Lord said to Moses, "Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel." So he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he did not eat bread or drink water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments." Deuteronomy 4:13: “So He declared to you His covenant which He commanded you to perform, that is, the Ten Commandments.” It was mandatory to whom? The world? NO, to Israel, a nation God specifically formed to be the only theocracy the world has ever seen. There are no other nations today like Israel. And God kept the Gentiles away from Israel unless they converted to Judaism. Eph. 2:11-16 speaking of the Gentiles v.12 “that at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace. and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity. Christ ended this separation by a new covenant and united both Jew and Gentile into one new organism (called the body of Christ, the Church) through his death He abolished of the Old covenant commandments (Eph. 2:15). This unification of the Jew and Gentile which was not by the old covenant "established peace” to both. If the Sabbath found in the Mosaic Law is required today, then Gentiles and Jews are still not one in the Lord. Then there is still be a wall partition to keep Gentiles away; but the wall of partition was broken down by the death of Christ. The wall of partition was the Old covenant, this means the Law of Moses was done away with for any new covenant believer to be obligated to keep (both Jew or Gentile). The Sabbath law is NOT a moral law for all mankind. Nowhere do we find anyone having a 7th day of rest before Israel was led out of Egypt (until Ex.16). God NEVER charged the Gentiles with breaking the Sabbath, NOT ONCE. No one ever kept it or was punished for not keeping it, not even Israel before it was given to them in the Exodus. It was given to Israel as part of the old covenant at Mt. Sinai. In fact, it was the seal of the covenant (for Israel only). Furthermore the Sabbath law is a ceremonial law given TO the Hebrew nation ONLY! How do we know this? Because all the things you are forbidden to do on this one day you can do on other days. You could not do this with theft, murder or adultery. Imagine saying I stopped stealing, murdering or having adultery on a certain day of the week but I continue to do this the rest of the week. Moral laws were applied to everyday life, they are wrong to break every day of the week. The Sabbath is not a moral law such as not to murder. You do not get punished for disobeying the Sabbath 6 days of the week, only on the Sabbath day can you break it. So any arguments on this are not biblical and are moot. Heb.7:12 “For the priesthood being changed, of necessity there is also a change of the law. Israel had a Levitcal priesthood, Christ under the new covenant is a Melchizedic priest, an eternal priest over a new covenant that he installed by his death and resurrection for both Jews and Gentiles. Those who keep the Sabbath as mandatory turn from THE GOSPEL OF THE GRACE OF GOD - Acts 20:24. And they turn it into THE GOSPEL of the Sabbath law, ignoring the new covenant. The gospel is the message of unmerited favor, God’s mercy toward sinful man that brings salvation, peace to both Jews and Gentiles by the new covenant made by Christ. How can the Old Covenant be the new covenant? It can’t. Neither can the New Covenant be the old covenant. They cannot be mixed, that is the very reason one is called old and the other new. It’s not an improved old covenant but a NEW covenant. |
